Larry La Trobe: Public Monument
THE CHALLENGE
Public monuments are often grand, imposing, and distant. The challenge was to understand how a small, whimsical bronze dog—Larry La Trobe—could become one of Melbourne's most engaged-with public assets, effectively challenging traditional definitions of a "memorial."
OUR APPROACH
Founding Director Dr James Lesh used this case to explore the impact of small-scale interventions:
► Collection Analysis: We examined Larry's role within the City of Melbourne collection, challenging the idea that heritage must be monumental to be significant.
► Urban Strategy: The research demonstrated how "human-scale" monuments create more inclusive environments, encouraging physical interaction and community attachment rather than passive observation.
THE OUTCOME
By validating the social value of such interventions, we provide a rationale for cities to embrace innovative, playful approaches to urban design that build genuine community connection.
