The Burra Charter: Heritage Principles

Date

2015 – ongoing

Location

Australia

THE CHALLENGE
The Burra Charter is the foundational document for heritage practice in Australia. Enshrined in policy and law, it governs how we identify and manage significance. The challenge for many projects is moving beyond a checklist approach to apply the Charter’s principles in a way that unlocks value.

OUR APPROACH
Founding Director Dr James Lesh provides expert interpretation of the Charter based on extensive research:

► Advanced Application: We utilise the Charter’s unique framework—specifically its emphasis on cultural significance and social value—to argue for innovative heritage solutions.

► International Alignment: We contextualise local issues within global standards, linking the Burra Charter to the Venice Charter and UNESCO World Heritage Convention.

THE OUTCOME
Our deep theoretical knowledge ensures that our advice is robust, defensible, and capable of withstanding the highest level of scrutiny at VCAT and Planning Panels.
