Heritage Interior Conservation: Fintona Girls' School

Project type

Interiors

Date

December 2025

Location

Balwyn, Melbourne

Client

Fontona Girls' School

THE CHALLENGE
Fintona Girls' School required specialist advice regarding the significant interior fabric of the historic Tourmont Building. Completed in 1891–92 and designed by renowned architect John Beswicke, the building retains exceptional original elements, including a rare Lincrusta "Art Nouveau" Dado.

OUR APPROACH
Led by Dr James Lesh, Heritage Workshop undertook a forensic investigation of the interior:

► Historical Analysis: We traced the provenance of the embossed wallcovering, confirming it as a durable Lincrusta product styling the celebrated Scottish Art Nouveau work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

► Technical Assessment: A detailed site inspection assessed the structural integrity of the material, identifying areas of delamination and wear consistent with its age and use.

THE OUTCOME
Heritage Workshop delivered a comprehensive conservation schedule to the school. We provided clear, actionable recommendations for the stabilisation and restoration of the Lincrusta, allowing the school to maintain this significant heritage asset while continuing to use the space effectively.
