Heritage Workshop has partnered with ArchiTeam to provide member architects with direct access to trusted heritage expertise. Working with heritage places presents clear challenges, from local planning controls and Heritage Overlays to identifying viable ways to adapt, renovate, and extend existing buildings. This partnership gives small practices an experienced, dependable sounding board to resolve heritage constraints and unlock project potential early.

Shared Values in Design and Conservation

This partnership is built on an alignment of values. Both organisations recognise that smaller practices produce some of Victoria's most thoughtful, site-responsive architecture. Conservation should not mean freezing a site in amber or treating modern architecture as an inherent threat to heritage fabric.

Heritage Workshop approaches conservation with strategic pragmatism and evidence-based rigour. We believe clear, early statutory advice empowers architects to test bold ideas, adapt existing buildings, and deliver contemporary additions that respect their historic context.

Extending ArchiTeam's Heritage Focus

This advisory service builds on ArchiTeam's broader work championing heritage architecture. Following the launch of the ArchiTeam Heritage Award in 2025, supported by the National Trust, the cooperative has placed a deliberate focus on celebrating excellence in conservation, alterations, and additions.

Pairing industry recognition through the awards programme with early-stage technical support gives small practices practical backing. It gives members the specialist guidance needed to design within sensitive contexts and deliver high-quality outcomes for heritage places.

Trusted Advice for Small Practice Architects

To support small practices, we're exclusively offering ArchiTeam members complimentary 15-minute advisory consultations.

These one-on-one sessions connect architects directly with specialist conservation advice tailored to their specific project and municipal context. It gives practitioners trusted, practical input when they need it most, helping them make informed design decisions before lodging permit applications.

What the Consultations Cover

Available through a dedicated online booking form, each 15-minute session provides focused guidance on key heritage challenges:

  • Planning controls and Heritage Overlays: Clarifying local planning scheme provisions, schedules, and permit triggers.

  • Alterations and extensions: Reviewing options to sensitively adapt, renovate, and extend heritage buildings.

  • Design constraints and opportunities: Providing independent conservation feedback to protect the design intent and support project outcomes.

Booking an Advisory Session

To book a session, ArchiTeam members can submit their project address and a brief overview of their proposed design interventions via the online enquiry form.

If your project requires formal heritage inputs down the track—such as a Heritage Impact Statement or ongoing design advice—we can also outline how we might support your application through council.

We look forward to connecting with you and hearing what you're working on.
