Land boom advertising: a mapping of the 1885 subdivision of Cremorne
This article examines the Cremorne Broadsheet, an 1885 land sale map, as an artefact of material culture. Its physical characteristics and content reveal its advertising purpose and highlight the desirability of the area. Despite its poor condition, the Broadsheet offers insights into land sales practices and urban development during Melbourne's boom period. Through close reading, this article uncovers the Broadsheet's role as a historical document and its connection to Melbourne's socio-spatial evolution, demonstrating the value of material culture analysis in understanding urban history.
